After losing a primary election. a prominent Republican critic of Donald Trump said that the party has “embraced his cult of personality.”
Harriet Hageman, a newcomer to politics who was backed by Trump, beat Liz Cheney, who was 56 years old.
After she joined the congressional committee looking into Mr. Trump’s attempts to stay in power, it was hard for her to get re-elected.
Once a rising star in the party, Ms. Cheney also voted to remove Mr. Trump from office.
The primary election in the mostly conservative state showed how the two sides of the Republican Party are at odds with each other.
Around the country, more traditional conservatives and candidates backed by Trump faced off before the midterm elections in November.
Because of this, Ms. Cheney, who has been a congresswoman for three terms and is the oldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, will not run for the seat she has held since 2017 in the US House of Representatives.
It was another win for Mr. Trump, who has helped dozens of candidates get elected before the midterm elections which will decide who controls Congress, governorships, and state legislatures.
And, for the most part, those candidates have done well, even though they have repeated his false claims of election fraud in 2020 and defended him as his legal problems have gotten worse.
In an interview with Today, Ms. Cheney said that electing people who questioned the results of that election was “dangerous” and a “red line” that she would continue to fight against.
“I will keep fighting,” she said, adding that she would do “whatever it takes” to stop Mr. Trump from going back to the White House.
Before the primary, there was talk that Ms. Cheney was getting ready to run against Mr. Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024. She told Today, “I’m thinking about it, and I’ll make a decision in the next few months.”
In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, Mr. Trump had already congratulated Ms. Hageman on her win.
“Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, how she acted and what she said and did to others that was mean and self-righteous ” he wrote. “Now she can finally fade away from the political scene forever.”
