Embezzlement and corruption identified in PetroCaribe, now let justice do its job

The publication of the summary of the report on the investigation by the Ethics and Anticorruption Commission of the Senate, led by Senator Youri Latortue, triggered immediate reactions. On the one
hand, cries of protest have been raised by former Prime Ministers and Ministers denounced in the document, and pointed out to be prosecuted. Meanwhile, among the political class and activists voices have been raised disqualifying Mr. Latortue for such a task. Notwithstanding the positions taken in relation to this initiative, the truth is that the report fully identified high-ranking officials of
previous regimes who wallowed in corruption and embezzlement. Limited in its power to bring about indictments, the Latortue Com mission has, nevertheless, made way for institutions having constitutional and legal clout to mobilize public action against offenders of all stripes. Pending release of the full report, the summary provides fodder to the critics of the Senator of Atibonit Ann
Aksyon (Artibonite In Action, Creole acronym AAA) about his own actions. Considering that he too has been involved in corrupt practices, some people question his qualifications to conduct such an inquiry.
